“From the narrow end on the left, which is where sound emerges from silence, the fragment of a song swells towards the right, where there is a sudden stop, maybe a pause for breath at the end of a phrase. Within the phrase are known and strange characters, and fragments of these, to mimic the way harmonies resonate within music; and there are visual rhythmic elements, like musical bars.”

“I am interested in language and have made a number of text based pieces where closely written iconic passages merge into the appearance of cloth. The voice series, which is my most current work, moves that interest from the written to the sound-based - but the mystery remains the same, and I like to play with letters in a mythic atmosphere so that they become pictorial elements but still invite meaning”

“Another synaesthetic image of a phrase from a song, working in the same template as the previous. Here though, sound builds from the fragmentary and evanescent on the left, to a solidity of complex crescendo, before, once again, the phrase ends.Text is not so apparent, so maybe an instrumental - I am reminded, in the build up, of elements of John Coltrane’s “Ascension” which is an inspiration.”

“Sharing a similar format to others in the “Songs” sequence , the sounds enter from the narrow point of silence on the left and read across the canvas from left to right, as in a book. Of all my work these three pieces are unusual in being in landscape orientation, which I think derives from the horizontal movement across time. This piece is more compacted indicating a fuller, more dense music. The notes do not correspond to coloured elements, but the idea is an attempt to portray a synaesthetic image.”

“Variations in density simulate the tensions of music. Lines from above indicate musical bars. There is the possibility of a mouth opened in anguish on the right, with blue teeth above it , belonging to a creature without limbs, denoting the plight of animals in front of humans, who cruelly exploit them. This is a way I would like to develop my work….. to clarify and emphasise the image of the mouth, and the crying out of animals. My interest in voice as subject matter provides an important background.“ The voices of animals could be magical music, but these days they are largely cries of pain, unheard behind the closed doors of factory farms. My greatest hope is that my painting could become a voice for them.
